Do I need a background in working with members of the adoption triad prior to entering the program?

A limited number of students are accepted into the program- between 25 and 30. Admissions priority is given to students who are employed by public child welfare agencies and those from licensed foster care agencies in New York State with a master’s degree in social work or a mental health field or who have a bachelor’s degree plus several years of experience working with populations affected by adoption. All MSW professionals working with children, youth, and families are welcome to apply. Mental health professionals who do not have this specialized experience but who wish to enter this field are welcome to apply.

What is required for receiving the certificate?

Students are expected to attend and participate in all ten class sections, read all required materials, and complete an approved research project by the end of the term which will demonstrate competency and knowledge of the content.

How will this program enhance the work I do already?

The Post Graduate Certificate Program is designed to offer social workers and mental health professionals the opportunity to learn advanced skills for working with persons affected by adoption and to increase their clinical and practice competency in this areas. It enables the practitioner, to be current on the latest approaches and research involving children who come from backgrounds of abuse and neglect. In addition, it provides program participants with the opportunity to build networks through other participants in the program.

What professional advantages will I have for receiving the certificate?

The names of therapists who complete the curriculum are posted with the Hunter College School of Social Work Adoption Certificate Registry. These names, in turn, are shared with adoptive families and workers who call requesting therapy resources. Families also have access to the list through the Hunter College website and other statewide adoption resource centers.

Can I receive CEU credit hours for attending?

Yes. Hunter College School of Social Work is an approved NASW Continuing Education Provider. Licensed Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Mental Health Counselors are eligible for one hundred (100) clock hours.
